Yasumi was a child of nature.

He woke on the dawn of every morning to pray to the Earthen Gods. On days of calm, it would be repaying grace, and on days of not, it would be pleading. Temperamental the child was, much like the other mortals of this Earth.

But to be compared to humans… it was sickening to Yasumi. This mortal was raised by gods, and only in name was he a ‘human.’ Beyond his fleshy construct, his dull, dark-brown eyes, and his matted, black hair, Yasumi was no more than a vessel—or a medium—for his gods. To be voided of all else was his duty—no, his honor.

His gods, nameless but many, were the Earthen Gods. In the days of yore, before Yasumi’s time, the shrine dedicated to their existence stood proudly on top of the rolling hillsides of Iwasetsu. Now, beaten and dilapidated, the shrine was then forgotten, left as an excerpt of history.

It was of no matter to Yasumi. To be with his gods was more than enough. The crops that Yasumi had gardened on the perimeter of the shrine filled his belly for most of the year, and non-mortals of similar faith would bring sustenance in the winter. He had no wants.

Though, for the Earthen Gods, the idle days that Yasumi wrought were not sufficient.

Yasumi’, said one, ‘It is time to go.

The human nodded, asking not why but only, “When do you need me?”

[ ] ‘Now. Time is of the essence.’
[ ] ‘We can wait until the dawn of the next day.’
[ ] ‘Never.’

Hata no Kokoro
A Divine Flame... I can’t believe it.

She didn’t even eat a god to get it... Shouldn’t she be dead!?

Kokoro stands surrounded by a pink fire, burning and still. Only her skirt and hair are flowing. The crowds fled, leaving us just with Reimu’s oni guard.

... Kokoro looks sick. I wish I had a camera.

“Joon.” Whoa! I straighten up and listen. Kokoro looks back at me and says, “Bring up your hands and fight!”

Ah! Ah, ahh... “Y... Yeah!” I say that with a nod, and get beside her.

Time to fight...

I think whatever we face in here can only get hurt by the Fire. It’s the only shit that makes sense after what I’ve been seeing. That said I don’t usually throw down with other people... just Koishi, and even then—

While I’m thinking to myself, Kokoro launches forward and slices into the oni’s stomach with her blade. Fu—! Shi—I’m getting shown up!

“Two little ‘gods’ is it?” the oni mutters, sounding like the blade means nothing to him. But, he’s wincing. “The Shrine Maiden can tame any breed of those.”

“Sorry to say I’m not tamable,” I fire back. I get into my fighting stance, my fists low and ready. “I can’t speak for the menreiki, but at least I’ll kick your ass.”

“Come and try it,” he says, and he lifts his weapon. Kokoro backs off and throws out her free hand. While I’m moving ahead the color green envelops me, and I feel even more mobile than usual. The heck?

The oni swings down and I dodge it. I’m surprised I did though. I mean, that went down faster than I could see it. He cracks the stones below us. In the aftermath, I clench my fist and throw it at his jaw. This time, it’s gonna hurt. I hear a pop and he stumbles. I glance at Kokoro and see her twirling her naginata overhead. A red light envelops her... and me. Fuck is she up to?

My arms and gut feel strange.

“That’s enough of that...” the oni growls. Lame line, dude!

The first thing you notice when you wake up is that you're dead.

Well, not really 'wake up,' per se. But it's definitely very noticeable for you.

Ah, so you're... well, 'awake' perhaps isn't the right word, is it? a voice says inside your mind.

You're pretty sure being dead means that you're supposed to have lost any sense of consciousness or anything like that. And that you can't hear things.

Ah, did you really think it would be that simple? Just... cessation of existence? Because if you did, ha! There's no way you're getting off that easy.

You feel something indescribable, as if you're getting twirled through a blender or something...

And then you wake up.

[ ] Something feels fairy suspicious about what just happened.
[ ] This really seems out of the ordinary.
[ ] You aren't feeling very merry right now.
[ ] Something's really bugging you.
[ ] There are gaps in this that aren't really adding up.

Continued from >>201537, new thread since I can finally give the quest a name.

For one thing, you can tell now why walking was so much harder. Your legs are long. You weren’t exactly the peak of masculine stature before, but you were at least a normal height. It’s immediately apparent, however, that you’ve gained at least half a foot overnight.

You’re not wearing your old clothes, intact or not. Instead, you’re wearing some kind of a… robe? (Not a dress, definitely not a dress.) There’s four colors to it, winding down from the top to the bottom, side by side. White to your front, a sandy yellow to your left, a deep brown to your right, and you can see a trailing stripe of red curling in from the back.

You try to move what you thought for a moment was a third arm, but it’s difficult and confusing to consciously use it. Instead, you reach behind yourself with both hands and force it to bend to your front. What you find certainly isn’t an arm. It’s a wing. A big wing. The white feathery appendage is easily as long spread out as you are tall.

Finally… you glance with trepidation towards your chest, gently poking at it. It’s soft, squishy, and most certainly protruding more than it used to. With shaky hands, you lift the bottom of your oh-god-it-is-a-dress-isn’t-it and look underneath. You fall back on to your back, close your eyes, and take a moment to have a silent mental breakdown.

...

……

………

…………

…………...Okay. You’re okay, you’re fine. It’s not all that bad. You’re like, some kind of a huge bird lady or something now, right? It could be worse. It could be a lot worse. And, like, you’re probably cute, right? So it’s fine.

Once more, you bring yourself onto your feet, this time paying close attention to your legs, and walk towards the light. It’ll take a bit to get used to this, you think. As your eyes adjust to the light, you g

At least, that’s what it seems like.

In an instant, the city lights vanish. For the first time since you got to this country, it’s totally silent. Like if the whole city and everyone in it disappeared. Without the ambient lighting, you suddenly can’t see a foot in front of you. It’s like you’re the only person left in the world. But…

But you don’t feel alone. There’s something like oil dripping down your spine, a feeling of being watched. Whether it’s some kind of sixth sense or an ancient primal instinct, you know for a fact that there is something else here. You’re frozen in terror, hoping that whatever is out there, it can’t see in the dark any better than you can. That’s when you realize something.

It’s getting darker. As if all light is being drained out of the sky, the forest is gradually getting darker and darker. You regain control of your legs, and without any conscious thought, you break out into a mad dash. You can tell that it’s following you, chasing you easily, without footsteps, without breath. Like a force of nature that’s turned its gaze on you and you alone. Your heart is a drumbeat, thump, thump, thump, your legs have gone numb. Your back itches like crazy. Your hair keeps getting in your face.

By now the darkness has reached its peak, and your eyes are now useless. It’s a miracle you don’t end up running into a tree. The only conscious thought in your head is the need to escape, to get away. Something slimy slides past you, again and again, raking at your body with icy claws. You aren’t sure, but you think that at least your pockets have been totally shredded. Again, and again, and again, the slimy something keeps tripping you up, clawing at you, and the thing that’s chasing you is getting closer, and closer.

Maybe you tripped on a piece of your shredded clothes. Maybe your shoelaces came undone. Maybe whatever’s been trying to trip you up finally sweeps you off your feet. Either way, the inevitable happens: you trip and fall. You brace yourself for hitt

You wake up, flailing and gasping and sputtering, until you realize that you’re no longer drowning. You slowly breathe in and out, stilling your racing heart, and open your eyes. Blinking, you examine the area around you.

Once more, you’re in a forest. This time, however, it’s far thicker, the dense canopy totally blocking out the sky. It would probably be extremely dark, were it not for the rays of morning sun streaming in from a break in the trees to your right. The sound of birds fills the air.

As for you, you’re laying on the ground, face up. Groaning, you try to stand up, but the moment you try to walk, you fall, tripping over your own legs like a baby horse on ice. You try to catch yourself with three arms, but it’s futile, and you end up falling flat on your face. Ugh. Thankfully, the ground is soft enough that it’s not painful, just humiliating.

Anyway, you-

wait back the fuck up

Something is definitely not right here. You toss away the embarrassment of fucking up using your own legs and immediately make inspecting yourself your top priority.

I tried man, she rejected him. Shit happens.

Also I really liked the ending. A common trope in anime for teenagers (most of it) is to let one mistake determine the personality of a character. As if everyone is perfect.

He commuted a mistake-a big one- and got away with it. That isn't bad, that's life. It happens. There's no need for him-and Youmu-to suffer just to balance an imaginary cosmic balance?

Mm. If anything that's sort of the "point" in that Taro believed in justice and ideals, and though he mostly kept his grander plans to himself (and Tewi) they were dramatic and running counter to what he was seeing. He wanted to believe the case was black and white, and it's not as if he discovered OH THEY'RE ACTUALLY GOOD PEOPLE it was more Oh, I like them, and that they had done wrong, but doing wrong doesn't condemn you utterly.

Youmu, at least in this story, sees things that way already. It's never been about right or wrong for her since she doesn't really have a solid concept of either. She's devoted and FEELS heavily. Probably what Taro genuinely liked about her. She wears her heart on her sleeve and judges people as they are--she isn't even really offended that Taro attacked her in the first place.

Comments, thoughts, feedback and general interaction from the audience is encouraged and appreciated. Feel free to let me know what you think at any time. It doesn't matter whether it's critique or something you might feel could be silly—I'll try my best to address it.

The bottom line is that this story is built with your input in mind!

Shinji felt lightheaded. Try as he might, it would be unfair to place all the blame on the deliciously bold drink. His host was also at fault; Remilia had not shied away from behaving familiar and her audacious—if not borderline salacious—extended physical contact had him off balance. That said, he was not uneasy. Merely wondering just how much of what he saw and felt was spontaneous and how much a stratagem. His mind would not yield so quickly to the mechanical pleasures of the moment.

Remilia seemed pleased with the situation. Her small body had come to rest ever more firmly against his own side. The wing that had begun to wrap around him had extended further and began to pull him even closer. That pink and black canvas felt as smooth as the material on the loveseat; its tip acted like prehensile limb and gently dug into his back. A glimmer of what could best summed up as pure devilry was found in her eyes. Secondary glints of of more carnal enjoyment also made themselves known.

Were he a mere human, perhaps he would have been wholly overwhelmed. There was no denying that he felt tested and pushed to a limit. And yet, his resistance was more coherent than even he expected. His thoughts were his own. As great as Remilia’s personal charm might have been, he was only swayed by that and not by any preternatural abilities. She may have tried to employ tricks on him but he was having none of it.

That, that, yes, that! That realization was thrilling in and of itself. It completely overrode his previous realizations. There was no reason for temerity, he told himself. The proof was in his own body. Even as he wondered whether or not he could consider himself truly alive or not, he

He stared blankly ahead without a care in the world, waiting to be acknowledged. Yes, something inside him knew that that was unusual. Maybe even wrong on some level. That didn’t matter, however. Even if he had tried to whip himself up into a less static state he had no idea what else he could be doing. It wasn’t like anything around him looked familiar at all. Not to mention—most importantly—it would be rude not to have some tea.

“There we go,” Yuyuko said with a perfectly courteous smile as she made sure every last drop of tea made it safely from the teapot to the cup. Had he not been so out of it, the man might have complimented her on her preternatural grace; nary a movement she made seemed sudden or unnecessary. He stared at the contents of the cup quietly, thinking little as the steam rose gently and his host sat across the table from him.

“Thank you,” he mumbled, finding the sound of his own voice somewhat unfamiliar. It was a good voice, mind. Lower on the tenor range with a quiet dignity to it that made people stop and pay attention subconsciously. Not that he was aware of it at that point. After all, he couldn’t even remember his own name.

“Please help yourself to a snack if you like,” the host motioned towards a small tray full of sweets. They looked pretty good but he wasn’t very interested.

Instead, he politely declined and reached for his cup. The tea smelled really good, unlike anything he had experienced before. It smelled of springtime and the delicate aroma of flowers. The taste mirrored that assessment, he found, as he let the first few drops of liquid sit on his tongue for a few moments before swallowing. “This is really good tea,” he said with a nod, feeling a warmth spreading quickly through his body.

“I’m glad you like it. It’s been a struggle to get Youmu to learn how to make it just right. That girl can be so hopeless when it comes to the simplest of things...” Yuyuko lamented with a good-natured look in her eyes.

“She’s done a good job,” the man said after taking another sip. “I feel like I’ve been revived by this tea.”
