how did you find out about touhou?

I learned about it through word of mouth when I was looking for new games to play and I got pointed to EraTW, a text eroge with just about every damn 2hu. It's not the first time I've "seen" or "heard" Touhou as everyone on the internet has heard a song or seen an image from it at some point, but actual awareness of it only came after having it pointed out. From there it was a very rapid spiral down the rabbit hole as I met with those characters in game and wanted to know more than what their dialogue (or lack thereof let's be real) told me. What caught me more than anything was that it was so unlike other settings like Kancole or Fate because of that good old doujin spirit, and with how much of it is based off of mythology it's damn near a doujin itself. It's not trying to sell you anything. The mythology part is really cool too, it's part of that same rabbit hole where learning about the basis of things lets you understand and appreciate it more. Like learning about trigrams and realizing that the ones on Yukari's design actually meant something profound about her whole personality. You find out why ZUN drew them like that.

Stop this and repent, it's not too late for you.

God isn't real. Cope harder.

Undo it by reading and viewing wholesome shipping material or other fanworks, idfk.

The EoSD/PCB demos being on those weird "free" game sites where they were actually all shareware or demos.
Marisa stealing the precious thing and the stuff that followed soon after got me into the fandom a little while later.

A freind directed me towards the doujin, "The Magician who Loved a Fake," and then I checked out the games afterwards.

Happened in multiple parts and I'm not sure what the real starting point was. In one of my late middle school classes, someone brought in a games magazine that had preview images of PCB and I thought it was kinda cool. My first contact with fan stuff was porn, maybe. I remember reading a doujin without any knowledge of 2hu and being confused by some bullshit in it. After that, I think it was just getting the games up to MoF at the time from a long dead torrent tracker, getting curious enough to look around, and finding the first incarnation of the Touhouwiki.

The first indirect exposure was the classic flash videos and mashups. I was way into YTP at the time and so a certain mashup naturally delighted me. I was belting, probably on the floor laughing. I was sort of into things that felt degenerate back then for the sake of shock and using it to troll others, very different than now as I’ve become far more prim and prissy as my personality woke up, while influenced by the elegance of 2hus like Remilia, Alice and Sakuya.
Anyway, it was early summer and my best friend had looked down the rabbit hole before me. I think SWR was the first he showed me. Then he showed me EoSD and IN. We made a bunch of jokes about it, but it was becoming love at first sight for the series already. IN’s music is what had me hooked for good, deep magic in that soundtrack… Then the fanart etc. etc.

I grew up watching Minecraft let's play video with Yukkuri(Iconic TTS with touhou persona) as a kid. They were very popular in Japanese youtube back then.
One day I looked up who is this "Yukkuri Reimu" are based off, then found a reimu's art by alphes.
I was never experienced with otaku material since I was 10 years old. I instantly fell in love with reimu.
Most of my early touhou experience were listening to ZUN's ost with my parent's phone and reading japanese wiki that explains each touhou character and lore.
Or watching The Memories Of Phantasm and IOSYS music video on youtube.
These are the material that "Touhou children" in Japanese internet watched before the gacha shit came out.
Nowadays I'm very hardcore fan of touhou, at least I aspire to be. I want to read more doujins(which untranslated SFW ones are rarely uploaded). I want to know about the most obscure lore of gensokyo. I want to create my own fanwork like drawing or video game.
I want to dedicate my life to Touhou Project.
There are meme saying that "Touhou is religion" and I think it's unironically true for some autists like me.
Religion from japanese perspective are similar to Muslim jihadism or some cult religion in 80's japan, generally bad ones.
I'm glad that I was born in Japan so I can read all the materials in original language and have access to it even though I was shamed for pirating things(I don't care anymore).
